Women have different reasons for wanting breast enlargement surgery. Many have lost breast volume following childbirth, after losing weight, or as part of the natural aging process. Others simply want breast implants to increase the size of their breasts.
Traditional breast augmentation surgery is done by placing a breast implant through a small incision under the breast, around the lower edge of the areola, or in the armpit.
An alternative type of breast implant surgery is transumbilical breast augmentation, also known as TUBA. During the transumbilical breast augmentation procedure, an incision is made in the navel and the implant is inserted through a tube.
There are two types of breast implants approved for use by the FDA:
- Saline breast implants
- Silicone gel breast implants
Silicone gel breast implants cannot be used for a TUBA.
