Breast Reduction

Learn More About Breast Reduction

Breast reduction, while not as common as augmentation, is performed on thousands every year. In contrast to reasons for augmentation, a removal of a portion of breast tissue is often for medical purposes. Conditions like back and neck pain are often associated with a large breast (macromastia). If a medical reason is valid, the procedure is often covered by insurance. Surgeries for cosmetic purposes are not eligible for insurance reimbursement.

Liposuction is often the method of choice. Your board-certified surgeon will determine whether you are a candidate for this minimally invasive procedure. Reasons to choose liposuction for treatment of macromastia include the following:

  • Local anesthesia is all that is required for the reduction procedure.
  • The recovery time is much shorter than one requiring general anesthesia.
  • Liposuction allows the breast to retain its natural form while removing 50 percent or more of the tissue.

Reasons for Breast Reduction Surgery

Reconstruction following a mastectomy may require a reduction on the remaining breast in order to obtain uniform size. Once the reconstruction is complete, you and your surgeon will evaluate the results to determine whether further procedures are indicated. In other cases, a reduction procedure--instead of augmentation--may be indicated on one side to obtain symmetry.
