Surgeon Cautions Women About Breast Augmentation

BALTIMORE -- An expert says some women should consider certain limitations to breast augmentation, a popular cosmetic surgery for women.

Dr. Armando Soto, a plastic surgeon at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, said women need to learn about some aspects of the procedure before choosing breast augmentation, including the danger of high expectations, reported WBAL-TV in Baltimore.

"I think the most important thing that people don't already know is that there's a limit to what we can change," Soto said.

The surgery can also leave most women in at least moderate pain for one to two weeks.

Soto said most women want to restore their appearance after having children or a major life change. But he stressed that implants are man-made, which translates into side effects, including changes in breast sensation and asymmetry.

The doctor said the surgery only lasts 10 to 15 years.

"They're not any different than your car or refrigerator; sooner or later, they're going to need to be replaced," he said.

Soto also said it's important for women to have a good relationship with their surgeon before deciding to seek implants.
