Breast Implant Sizes

Before breast augmentation surgery, you will meet with your plastic surgeon to discuss breast implant size. Although cosmetic surgeons have differing opinions on selecting the appropriate implant size, it is common practice among plastic surgeons help patients to determine the size that may be best suited to them by measuring the base diameter of the breast.

Choosing Your Breast Implant Size
Even though your breast implant size may be somewhat based on your breast measurement, you still have a say in the size of your breast implants. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) recommends that you use the following techniques to help you select the appropriate breast implant size:

• Be honest in discussing desired implant size with your plastic surgeon.
• Choose pictures from magazines of the breast size that seems ideal to you, and show them to your plastic surgeon. Make sure the women in the photographs have a body type that is similar to yours.
• Don't use bra size as the only means of defining your desired breast implant size. Bra sizes vary considerably among styles and manufacturers.
• Your plastic surgeon may have implants in his or her office for you to try out by stuffing them inside your bra. You can do the same thing at home, using plastic bags filled with oatmeal.
• Try to choose implants that are the right size for your body. Breast implants that are too big will make your figure look disproportionate, and may also be more prone to sagging.

During your breast augmentation pre-surgical consultation, your existing breast tissue will be evaluated to determine if you have enough to cover your desired breast implant size. If you choose a breast implant size that is too large for your tissue, the implant edges may be visible after your surgery, and you may increase your risk of breast enhancement complications.
