Going into a consultation with knowledge about the procedure you want to have is key. To help the doctor understand your goals, some doctors encourage patients to bring in photos of themselves at a younger age, or of other people with features they like. "I'm not going to guarantee that you are going to get that result, but it is a good tool of communication," says Beverly Hills surgeon Peter B. Fodor, MD. "A photograph can tell me a lot more accurately what the patient would like to see than words often can." A photo can also tell the surgeon if the patient has unrealistic expectations.

In addition, you should ask to see before-and-after photos of the doctor's actual work. These photos can help inspire a dialog between you and your doctor about specific changes that interest you. In the end, you should trust your doctor to advise you on the appropriate change that is right for you.
