Fashion, femininity and your figure have one element in common: the curve of the breast. Fashion choices cover the curves, yet many are designed to enhance them. Through the ages, women have turned to brassieres, corsets and now surgery to obtain a more aesthetically pleasing bustline. Breasts are one of the most defining features of a woman's figure, and there is no doubt that the size, shape and appearance of the breasts can influence how women feel about their bodies, and, in turn, themselves.
Breast surgery is a highly emotional and fulfilling experience for many women-just ask one of the more than 575,000 women who underwent a breast augmentation, lift or reduction in 2004, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. On top of that, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) reports that more than 63,000 women had breast reconstruction surgery in 2004.
Breast surgery is a very personal decision. "Most women consult a plastic surgeon after they have carefully thought about surgery and come armed with a lot of research," says Iliana Sweis, MD, of Northbrook, Illinois. "Homework does not, however, replace the guidance of an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon necessary for a woman to make the decision for breast surgery with confidence." Of course, those who love and support you may have something to say about it, too, but remember, the effects of the surgery on your breasts and body are yours, and yours alone.
