There seems to be as many medical societies as there are doctors, but the societies below are the creme de la creme. They permit membership only after peer review and require specific qualifications and other membership standards. In addition, their professional guidelines include strict standards of ethics and patient safety.
The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS)
Since 1967, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery has been the world's leading organization in cosmetic surgery education and research. Surgeons certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery specialize in cosmetic surgery of the face and body and have met additional requirements for clinical experience, ethics and continuing education in cosmetic surgery. Members are required to operate only in accredited or licensed surgical facilities, and required to submit a stated number of continuing medical education hours specific to patient safety. ASAPS provides referrals to its member-surgeons in the United States and Canada, as well as online consumer resources specific to cosmetic procedures.
